OJO

Interactive Lecture Series, performed during Engagement Party at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles. Summer 2009.

The Interactive Lecture Series consisted of three lectures. Each lecture was 30 minutes in length and featured a special guest presenter. The first lecture of the evening, The Fire Lecture, consisted of group clapping, popping bubblewrap in unison, acoustic and electric musical accompaniment supplied by OJO, a video projection of a growing sun, and a Werner Herzog lecture read by Kristin Calabrese. Mambo Freeform was the second lecture of the evening and was hosted by Julio Cesar Morales. Julio presented the music and vocal stylings of Perez Prado. Then the members of OJO and Morales lead the audience in the creation of an improvisational mambo. Eamon played the car rim, Chris supplied the music and Prado vocal samples, and Josh, Justin, Brenna and Moi got the audience chanting and singing along. The final section erupted in everyone dancing spontaneously on the stage to the sounds of their own mambo. The final lecture of the evening hosted by director Alex Rivera entitled, Science Fictions, engaged ideas of the third world, especially Latin America, by screening sections of Rivera's film Sleep Dealer. Rivera presented his film and then was interviewed by Moi. The interview section of the lecture was sonically manipulated by OJO. OJO also played music during the conversation. The audience was invited to ring their cell phones simultaneously during the interview, as well as create feedback by holding their cell phones speaker to speaker.
