The Sound of America features cover songs from America's past that engage ideas of social justice, consciousness and American history. I recorded my voice acapella out in the world, catching the ambient sounds of daily life, so that my vocals became sonically intertwined with the site. I sang in Detroit, as a way to connect with the rich music history there as well as the history of social upheaval, rebellion and rejuvenation. I then took the vocal recordings and added new instrumentation here in Los Angeles. Side A, "United Sound" is a cover of the Dramatics "Whatcha See is Whatcha Get." This song promenently features a sample of Ana & Ina's "Come Around" from On Dockweiler Beach, released by Constellation Tatsu in 2017 and produced by Ian James. Side B is a cover of Marvin Gaye's "What's Goin' On". This side features the drumming of Kent Familton recorded live during Constituent Parts at Samuel Freeman Gallery in 2017. A record release party and performance will take place on July 21, 2018 at Leroy's in Chinatown.
